Squirrels are also attracted to corn and sunflower seeds. Live-trapped squirrels should be released at least two or three miles away to prevent their return. Squirrels are accused of digging up laws as they bury acorns. They may also dig up flower bulbs and, in years past, were serious pests around small cornfields and wooden corn cribs. Squirrels are associated with mature trees, where they normally find their food and lodging. Gray squirrels prefer tree cavities for winter dens and raising young, but will construct leaf nests, 12 - 16" in diameter built in tree tops, to use in spring and summer.

Squirrels are also notorious for raiding bird feeders and can consume large amounts of corn and other nuts and seeds. Squirrels are intelligent, persistent, and agile adversaries. They can climb a vertical brick face, scale a vertical aluminum-sided house, or run up a gutter spout as easily as climbing a tree, and they can run along over or underhanded, on utility wires, just as effortlessly. Squirrels are captured in metal box live traps and transferred to a soft cloth-handling cone. There they are examined for general health, weight and size measurements are taken.

Squirrels are only active during the day. When you observe damage, first make sure another animal is not causing it. Squirrels are easier to clean when they are slightly warm and the skin is still supple; prompt skinning and gutting keeps the meat tasty and less gamey because it prevents bacteria from souring the meat. I put squirrels in an open-weave gunnysack to keep the carcasses cooler.

Flying squirrels are the only known vertebrate reservoir of R. Interest in this disease was high in the 10 years after the first isolation of R. Flying squirrels have been seen on this project, but due to the fact that the two species look so similar, a positive identification as to which species has been seen has not been accomplished. Therefore, information on both species is provided. Flying squirrels are entirely nocturnal, inhabiting mature forests and parks, as well as other woodlands. They utilize the many cavities that are found in mature trees for nesting and winter denning.

Tree squirrels strip the bark off redwood, redcedar, and certain other trees to line their nests. They seek the tender cambium layer of other trees for food. Tree cavities are most numerous in old forests where wood rot, frost cracking, woodpeckers, and carpenter ants have created or enlarged cavities. Witches' brooms, clumps of abnormal branches caused by tree rust diseases, are the most common denning sites of flying squirrels in Interior Alaska. Tree squirrels are familiar to most Americans and are an excellent example of how one species can have different color morphs. The red-bellied squirrel is a Mexican species introduced to the Florida Keys, where it persists in small numbers.

Tree dens, many formed by woodpeckers, are remodeled for winter quarters and often serve as nurseries for late winter litters. If existing trees are too small to provide suitable dens, leaf nests are built by cutting twigs with leaves attached and weaving them into warm waterproof shelters. Tree squirrels with West Nile virus may display neurological signs such as uncoordinated movement, paralysis, shaking, or circling. It should not be assumed that every squirrel with neurological signs has West Nile virus, as there are other factors that cause these symptoms. Tree leaves may impede visibility somewhat, but they likewise present an advantage to the early season hunter.

Dear TIm,

I very much enjoyed speaking with you on the phone about the animal problem in my ceiling. You not only explained how your company works, but the fact that you close up any potential entry areas and guarantee your work made me feel I had chosen the right company.

Your technician, Russell, politely called ahead to let me know when he would arrive within the time window we had predetermined. Upon arrival, Russell surveyed my raccoon and squirrel problem, then explained to me how he was going to handle it. He was very thorough and maintained phone contact with me to keep apprise of the situation. Additionally, he made several trips back to check the progress and then finish the job.

He also pointed out that my kitchen exhaust had no cover on it, and he took care of that issue as well.  Which was very helpful, because I would have felt awful if I had accidentally smoked a nest of baby birds.

Thank you for your service. I will certainly recommend your company to anyone I know who has a wild animal control animal issue. Thank again.

Sincerely,

KT (Kathleen) Robeson
